Pollution

I chose to discuss, “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, that is floating in our Pacific Ocean from Japan to Hawaii and from Hawaii to California. The “patch” is a massive swirl of plastic, chemicals and debris trapped in the swirling currents of the North Pacific Gyre. We created this disaster and the social implications are tremendous. How do we prevent this from happening again? What habits in our throw away society need to be changed to keep plastic out of our waters? Is there hope that this bobbing mass of plastic can be cleaned up? This plastic will now be impacted by the Japanese earthquake and the  tsunami that followed. We can't prevent natural disasters like earthquakes, but we can find ways to change our ways and take preventative measures so that there is less impact on not only our oceans but for the whole planet.
