Uganda, an under-developed country in Africa, has become
infamous globally for its “Kill the Gays” bill, which if enacted, will create
laws where ‘aggravated homosexuality’ can be punishable by hanging. 90% of the
country is Christian and in their efforts to control what they perceive as
immoral perversion, they have set out on a bloody crusade against homosexuals. Their
constant attacks on human rights have strained US diplomatic relations since
19621 and they are now pushing the bill further. After
much debate and heated urgency from the U.N. and the United States alike,
Uganda set aside the ‘Kill the Gays’ bill for months to come. However, the bill
will still be voted on by the Ugandan Parliament for ratification or dismissal.
Quite obviously, this is a flagrant act of vicious
political leaders, creating mass homophobia and hatred in the process toward a
small percentage of their poorly-run nation. They believe by executing the homosexuals,
they can rid their country from them. Nothing could be farther from the truth,
they are only suppressing homosexuals into hiding, creating their delusion of a
‘homosexual-free nation’. It’s quite disturbing to think how such a majority of
this country can believe in hatred of its purest form, against those who want
to live their lives without disturbance. As the bill has progressed, the United
States has kept diplomatic pressure on them, with Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton leading the way. If Uganda does make the ill-informed and terribly
hateful decision to enact the legislation, it’s likely the world leading
nations will react with not only fiery condemnations but diplomatic sanctions.
Hopefully as time goes on, the political and religious leaders of Uganda will
move towards more important priorities of their nation, such as poverty, infanticide,
early deaths, and so on.
