The Olympics - a widely honored and treasured event for athletes world-wide, last held in London, England and is now set in Sochi, Russia in 2014. But this year may hold issues for those who fall in the LGBT category. Russia has become notorious for being anti-gay, vehemently opposing any organized action in favor of gays and lesbians, even blocking an attempt to set up a Pride table at the Olympics. All the while, they are attempting to pass a law to further discriminate against homosexuals, creating even more difficult circumstances for LGBT folks. It will be an interesting turn of events to see how the Olympics unfold in 2014, with tensions high and athletes representing their countries regardless of their sexual orientation.
Obviously, the views of the Russian government are going to create turmoil when LGBT athletes are present from other countries. They are discriminating against the ascribed status of LGBT folks and believe that by outlawing homosexuality, they will prevail in 'preventing' it from spreading. This view is common, similar to the one held by a majority of Ugandans, that by oppressing the sexual minority, they will simply disappear. While it may true their appearance in society may temporarily fade, it is only because they are staying in the closet for their safeties sake. And because sexual orientation is a social construct, the many views of what exactly homosexuality is only further complicates the issue. Hopefully in time the Russians will adjust their views to move along with the progressive world and we will be able to watch the Olympics knowing everyone is competing happily, as who they truly are.
