On Friday, February 22, 2013, Luiz Sanchez of the website Daily News Egypt posted the article "Human rights rapidly deteriorating in Egypt: human rights organisations". In the article the author reports that at least 21 different human rights groups, both from within Egypt and other parts of the world, are claiming that the rights of the people in Egypt are in a worst state now than they were under the country's former president Hosni Mubarak. These human rights organizations are trying to urge Egypt's current president, Mohamed Morsi, to take action and put a stop to the deterioration. Claims are being made that Egypt is experiencing another type of authoritarian regime, which in the past eight months has included such horrible acts as the use of torture on civilian protestors, as well as attacks on the media. A statement from the different human rights organizations claims that many personal rights are being threatened by the country's current state of affairs, and states fear of what additional rights will be threatened if President Morsi doesn't devote attention to and express concern about the current abuses. Some of the rights that the articles claims are under attack include the right to the collective exercise of a political or social protest, freedom of relief and religious practice, freedom of the press, women's rights, and the right to a fair trial. The article also speaks of how many of the attacks and kidnappings of civilian protestors, murders of journalists, as well as acts of rape and assault on women, have been connected to the Muslim Brotherhood and various governmental groups. Although the article human rights groups are hoping to reach out to the leaders of the Egyptian government for help, they fear that little will be done because they believe the government is who is behind the heinous acts to begin with.
This article does little to connect the claims that are made back to actual observations or events that are occurred throughout Egypt, but the information that is provided is terrifying enough. Most of the rights that were reported as being under attack are ones that far to many of us take for granted here in the U.S., as well as in many other parts of the world. Although our country is still far from perfect, we are definitely leaps ahead of countries like Egypt that are seem to be falling further and further behind. I think it's good to see so many different human rights groups standing together to try to reveal the truth of the rights abuses that are happening in Egypt.
