International women in film & arts gather at UN to stop violence against women

This article is about women who are gathering around the world to use film, art and other media sources to help combat violence against women around the world. On March 4th, 2013, the UN will hold its annual conference regarding the status of women around the world. Several news sites, as well as filmmakers and poets will also be attending. According to the article, one in three women (roughly one billion) will suffer from male initiated violence in their lifetime. Media influence is one of the most powerful tools for change in our modern society, one in which media almost always mirrors the actions of society and vice versa. 

The United Nations can be one of the most influential establishments to help fight violence against women, if they choose to enforce the policy they create. Combined with the efforts of filmmakers like Tiffany Hisuing, Nayla al Khaja, Evan Grae Davis, artists and poets such as Alice Walker and Sophia Mcloud are all using art and visual media to bring attention to the different kinds of violence that women experience on a global level. While violence against women is deeply embedded in the worlds history, violence in the modern day calls for modern solution, which has taken a medium of filmmaking. It is a way to see first hand the pain these women feel, and urge the audience to fight alongside their fellow sisters to stop violence against women.
