Blog #5:Servicemen Out of Line
In Japan,
two U.S. military servicemen were sentenced to prison for the rape they committed
in October 2012 in Okinawa, Japan. One of the men was sentenced to 10 years in
prison and the other man was sentenced to 9 years, both men were in the navy. The
men had attacked the woman in a parking lot then they proceeded to rape her.
The commander of U.S. forces in Japan has now set curfew rules for military
personnel about times in and out of the base as well as sending an apology to
the victim. Women groups in Okinawa have begun protesting for restrictions on U.S.
military personnel when they are given time off of base.
“Violent
crimes, especially rapes, by U.S. troops in Japan have divided the two
countries for decades.” This piece of information from the article is the most important
part in this incident. Bad blood appears to have been around for decades
between the U.S. and Japan. This amused me because I thought the U.S. and Japan
did not have problems between the two. If this theme continues, especially with
our military that is held in such high regard in the U.S., what will other
countries think of us and could they band together and stand up against us?
That may sound a little ridiculous, but violent crimes, especially rape can
really touch an emotional nerve in humans. This really is a global social issue
cause it not only affected Japan’s view on our military, but being that this
was a top global story for crime, it could affect the attitudes of the rest of
the countries we have troops stationed in.
