Blog 1: Education and India

On January 21, 2013, an article, ‘Focus on Learning’ Outcomes, was written to point out the challenges and steps India has to take to create a productive higher education institution. In the article, Vatsala Shrangri interviewed a Union Minister of human resource development, MM Pallam Raju, on the future for higher education institutions in India. His vision for higher education is to “improve the quality of research in educational institutions in the country. He criticizes the many challenges faced in India that may be holding them back. One of the most important areas he focused on was the need for more teachers. He believes the key priority to education is “building a capacity of qualified teachers.” India needs teachers to help the disabled, physically and/or mentally, the dropouts and, out-of-school children. I was interested in this article because teachers should be well qualified before they enter the classroom. In order to improve education, teachers must be considered one of the key components in the schools. The minister of human development basically believes that our only connection to the students is through the teachers. We have to train new teachers to focus on the child and the needs of each child in the classroom.  I believe that higher education institutions provide a better opportunity for employment and career options for the future. MM Pallam Raju believes that “a nation’s strength lies in its intellectual property.” I definitely agree with him because the intellectual ability of a nation determines the change to come in a society.
