In this article it discusses how young women are agreeing to
marry to ease the financial burden on their parents of caring for them. Desperate parents are being forced to
consider using their daughters as “economic bailout” or a way to get the rest
of the family out of the refugee camps.
Within the article one particular lady named, Kalash, discusses how she
got married at 17, had been married less than a month, and didn’t the wedding
that she had dreamed of as a little girl. She stated that she had been proposed
to fortunately, but her wedding took place in a crowded and squalid refugee
camp far away from her home. Other women
her age, some even younger are pressured into marrying. In the article it said that local sheikhs say
they are helping families by facilitating marriages for young Syrian girls.
There have also been reports of taxi drivers offering "Syrian brides"
to single men visiting the region. A
representative of a Charity organization stated that there have been 29
marriages since the camp had opened in July 2012. He says he is aware of girls being married to
men outside of the camp's confines but he does not follow up on the fine
details of the unions.
Reading about women whom are so young and are being forced
to marry was such a disturbing finding.
If I were to be placed in this situation it would be hard being that I’m
use to the traditions of marriage. I
couldn’t see myself being forced into a marriage especially with someone whom I
didn’t know. This just goes back to the rights of women. Everything is always put into a restraint for
women and they are put into situations where they cannot control or can’t get
out of. This just shows that no matter
what women everywhere will be put into tough situations.
