Handbag company lifts Pakistani women from poverty

Summary: Today on CNN Money an article was posted about a handbag company in Pakistan that has been helping women in poverty there. The article tells how the company started off really small as a for non profit organization. This handbag company known as BLISS was able to offer a living wage to the 40 Pakistani women. The article stated that on average a woman in Pakistan would make about $2 a day which was not enough for living. The company had ran into troubles and realized that the non profit route was the way to go, so they since then have moved the company to Hafizabad, which has a high rate of female unemployment. As of today the company now has 150 workers that receive $2-3 per hour, which is still less than what a male would receive.

Analysis: From this article we can see how even a small business is able to make a difference. There are gender issues within the country that add to the poverty as well. Is it fair for a male to be paid more than a female worker on average? You can find similar cases of the difference of pay in many different countries all around the globe. From reading the article I would say that the economy needs more opportunities for jobs or small business to be created. Through creating these small businesses such as BLISS more jobs are created which will in turn lessen the poverty over the world.
