For my first article for crime I researched Flint Michigan.
My reasoning for choosing flint Michigan is because my wrestling coach grew up
there. He always told me there was a lot of crime there but I had no idea it
has been number one in the nation on numerous occasions. According to the
article I read http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2012/06/flint_police_department_staffi.html
one main reason there is so much crime
in Flint maybe because of the retirement rate. There simply isn’t enough police
working in Flint since 2007 they have lost a little over 100 policemen. One
other reason the crime rate is so high is because the jail isn’t open for all offenders
and in many cases when someone gets caught doing a crime they are given a
ticket to appear in court instead of being taken to jail.
I already knew Flint was a bad place just based off of what
my coach told me about his childhood, but after reading this article it
surprises me that he made it out. I think the solution to dropping the crime
rate is simple just like was stated in the article they need more law
enforcement in that city. How is it that Flint is smaller than Detroit but has
a higher crime rate? And why is that many of the crimes that are being
committed aren’t followed by arrests but only tickets to show up to court? I
think that Flint is setting their selves up for failure. You simply cannot
think that with that little police officers and not arresting people committing
crimes and putting them right back on the streets will bring the crime rate
down. But everything is always easier said than done, so even though you can
say let’s put more officers out there and locking these offenders up sounds
easy there is probably going to be a lot of work put behind that effort.
