Blog 5 Education Reform Mexico

On February 23, 2013, Andres Oppenheimer wrote an article on Mexico’s recent decisions to modernize its public education. This one decision may have changed things for education reform in Mexico. Union Leader Elba Esther Gordillo was one of millions that controlled the education system in Mexico. Having her arrested allow education reform to take place. Accused of abusing funds, she was arrested for tax invasion and corruption. Along with Gordillo, up to a million of his National Education Worker Union members were working together to control the education system. They had so much power, that they controlled who was hired and to be promoted. Mexico’s congress had to make decisions fast and once the bill is passed and Gordillo is out the picture, education reform in Mexico will become a movement. As a result of the union control, Mexico was “ranked on the lower end of the worldwide standardized PISA test.” If the bill is passed and Mexico is allowed to make key education reforms, this will be one historic week in Mexico.
After reading this article, I now better understand the power and authority a group can have over a country. The fact that the union group was able to decide who was able to get a teaching job and who was promoted, tells me that the community of Mexico has no voice and is not fighting for their rights. These children need the best education they can get by great instructors. If the bill is passed everybody will have a chance to shine. No one will have to worry about the security of their job and the children will able to learn effectively. I am in full support of the decision to arrest Gordillo and getting rid of the National Education Workers Union id it will benefit the education in Mexico.
