Blog 7-Indian Women

Every since December, female tourists and Indian women have been on alert when traveling in India.  Security has been visibly ramped up since a young 23 year old woman was brutally raped and eventually died of her wounds.  Women are urged to “observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions, restricting evening entertainment to well-known venues, and avoiding isolated areas when alone at any time of day.”  They are also told not to travel alone, wear revealing clothing, drink or smoke in public, or be overly friendly.  Rape incidences are higher in the US than in India, but the vigilance with which many urban women conduct their day-to-day lives feels more constant and more intense. This is a reality that Indian women have to live.

This is very disturbing to know that this happens so frequently in one area.  The intensity of knowing that death may be approaching just from being a woman is even harder to grasp along with all of the other issues women face, just from being a woman.  Being that this is being more recognized in the news I’m wandering will the chances increase, will anything be done to protect these women?  In the article nothing was mentioned about anyone receiving any jail time for the women who had been raped and the women who had died from the incidences.  If there isn’t anything being done to catch these indeed criminals, then what message will be sent to future harassers? To keep going, you won’t get caught.  I hope something is done immediately to protect the lives of these young women, they have a full life ahead.  It’s hard to believe though this has been a nightmare to women since 2008 being that the country has 6.5 million visitors a year.  You would think something would have been done and the numbers would decrease.
