Enyea Parks; Blog 6; Chavez

This article talks about the accomplishments of former Venezuela president Hugo Chavez. Though he is now deceased the talk about him and "Chavismo" carries on. He was a known critic of the United States policies and a leader of Latin American policies. Though many didn't agree with the his style of leadership, the Venezuelan economy experienced significant growth after 2003, when Chavez government gained control over the petroleum industry. The oil prices also began to collapse after 2008. Some critics of Mr. Chavez suggest that his policies didn't have much of an impact on other Latin American countries and some think that he is doing exactly what other democratic governments are doing. Mr. Chavez impacted more that just Venezuela, he also helped places like Ecuador and Bolivia which both had left-leaning governments.
Economists have not yet thought of a way to measure the impact Chavez had on the government in it's entirety, they have however been able to document some of his progress through the infant mortality rate. Between the years 2003-2012 there has been a significant decline in infant mortality in Venezuela and an even faster decline in Brazil, Mexico and Peru. This data was collected by the Central Intelligence Agency. Chavez also helped close the gap in school enrollment in Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and also Mexico. He helped with the expansion of free public higher education and the latest data showed an increase of enrollments by 80 percent in 2009.
Without the guidance and political doings of Hugo Chavez the fate of Venezuela and many other Latin American countries would have been very doubtful. The Latin people would not have been given the opportunities they were given and this could be the difference between a successful livelihood and one that isn't.
