On Thursday March 15th,
seven people some who were part of the taxi union, were fatally shot in a bar
in Cancun several miles from the cities beachfront resorts. The motive is under
investigation but the state prosecutor Armando Garcia Torress, said that the
involvement of organized crime gangs who have targeted taxi workers in other
states have not been ruled out. The shooting happened in a working-class
neighborhood and not on a tourist location. However, Mexico’s latest crime
activity has not been helping tourism because the crimes have been near tourist
spots. There have also been cases of rape in the city. An Italian woman in
Playa del Carmen, near Cancun was raped, and the sexual assault of six women
from Spain last month at a beach house in Acapulco, on the Pacific coast.
From reading this article, these
crimes could come off as random shootings. However, in the article it states
that there have been organized crime gangs that have targeted taxi workers.
There was not a lot of information about the neighbored that the crime occurred
in as well. So, there are many factors that could have played a part in these
crimes being committed. As we had learned in class, most crimes are not random
and there is some kind of motive behind them. Unfortunately, the public does
not see it this way and the recent crimes have not helped tourism rates.
Tourist locations are obviously placed in nicer parts of the city. This makes
the chances of something happening to tourist very slim. Tourists should
research where most of the crime is being committed and stay away from those
places.
