Blog 8: Syrian Rebels Request US Aid

The topic of this week’s blog, and an interesting topic to address is the continuing war in Syria.  Syria is a republic led by what The United States refers to as an “oppressive regime” and it is in the middle of a war that has been going on for two years.  This civil war was started after The Arab Spring protests were shut down violently by the Syrian army under orders from Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad.  Now, rebel forces are fighting to overthrow al-Assad and are being funded partly by The United States.  This article covers the story of the Syrian rebel leader requesting the US to use their Patriot missile system to protect the areas of Syria under the rebels’ control.  The US has already placed Patriot missiles in neighboring Turkey to protect the NATO member state from potential strikes from Assad’s regime.

This article touches on the important topic of United States intervention and discusses one of the options that The United States has in continuing to be involved in the Syrian civil war.  The opposition leader in Syria even mentions his frustration with The US and the fact that they have not intervened even more to bring an end to the Syrian war. This reliance on The US equipment and funds for the rebel group has ensured that The US will always be at the heart of the discussion when in fact Syria is a sovereign country. It is an issue when such imperial powers are funding overthrows of government because these rebel groups keep the weapons long after the rebellion and many of these weapons are used again to commit crimes or further increase conflict in certain regions. One can only hope that the Syrian war will end shortly so that peace might return to the country.
