Summary
Sochi. Every two years we come
together as a world and celebrate our very best athletes in the Olympic
games. This Friday is the beginning of
the 2014 Winter Olympic games held in Sochi Russia. With a gathering of so many
countries in one place it can be assumed that there will be a security threat.
With Sochi, we don’t have to assume, well-known terrorist organizations have
out right said that Sochi is a target and that it will be done “By any means.”
The Russian government has an estimates 100,000 security personal watching over
the games through several different channels. But is that enough? It the recent
weeks leading up to the games there have been several suicide bomber attacks.
The Russian president Vladimir Putin has assured that the games will be safe
and successful, but has had a long history and struggle with militants with in
its borders. Since the 1990’s 80,000 citizens have died due to the struggle
between Islamist and Jihadist. The
conflict goes back over 200 years. Sochi land was once part of a Muslim
population known as the Caucasus. During the mid 1800’s it was seized by
Russia, which amounted to the genocide of many Muslims. Sochi is no longer
about the games, it is about what will come after.
Analysis
This article illuminates the long
and history behind the threat of terrorism in this region. Although not discussed in this article, the
Olympics are about peace and coming together as nations to celebrate our
athletes. With the looming threat of suicide bombers Sochi is not exactly in a
state of state of terror, but the threat is inmate and real. Holding the games
in such a region is a lot like poking a bear. A big bear. The power of terrorism is in it s ability to
grab headlines and command the worlds attention. Some of the most infamous act
are known just by there date, 9/11. Now the biggest stage is set for the
Olympic games and the world is watching. The question is what will we watch? The
triumph of athletes or the fall of nation?
