Blog 1: Idealized Body Shapes of Korea

Summary
In an article read by Katy Waldman, she discovered  how the people of South Korea are describing their bodies based on the shapes of letters of the Roman alphabet. The process of doing so is called “alphabetization”.   This has become a popular way of determining who has the most desirable body shapes.  This method uses letters like “S” and “C” to depict the amount of curve from the buttocks and breasts and using “X” to describe a girl with long legs and long arms which would be the more desirable letters to be described as. On the other hand the letter “B” depicts a woman with big boobs and a big belly and “O” stands for an obese female. Entertainers such as pop stars and models discuss their alphabetized body shapes openly with the public and tell which products to use to get a body shape as theirs are.
Analysis
This reading depicts how labels can be placed on people based upon their looks and their body. The people of media sends out these messages of what a body should look like and which shapes are more desirable thus leading the human race, in especially women, to try their best to match up their looks with what society approves of and glorifies. Not only do the pop stars and entertainers who model off these alphabetized body shapes influence females to want to look as they do but the advertised products that they use as well.  Many of these Korean females strive to someday look like the pop stars so they purchase the cosmetics, diet pills, and surgeries in order to fulfill what it seems that society identifies as being beautiful.
