Blog 1: Security Concerns on a Honduran Island. Teresa Lindsey 02/07/2014 4:37

Summary:
The article “Security Concerns on a Honduran Island” discussed the crime rate in Honduras specifically as it relates to Bay Islands. With Honduras being the country with the highest murder rate tourist were warned to stay away from certain areas and travel in groups. The largest of the Bay Islands, Roatan has seen an increase in crime which ordinarily was contained to the mainland. Roatan had a high profile murder on December 22, 2013, Nedenia Post Dye, who is the great-granddaughter of General Foods heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, was found stabbed to death in her luxury spa. A local musician has been charged with her murder and local residents have formed an online group on Facebook called “Roatan Crime Watch. An American Tourist and his family were shot at and robbed in broad daylight. Cruise passengers and visitors were warned about venturing to the far east part of the island and past the town of Oak Ridge. They were also cautioned to travel in groups, don’t carry large amounts of cash & valuables, and to avoid certain areas after dark.

Analysis:
This article highlights how important is for a tourist to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Little things that you take for granted are the very things that criminals prey on and pounce on. Tourist that were aboard Carnival’s Conquest shouldn’t have to double check to make sure they didn’t bring too much money in their wallets or if the digital camera that they are using to take photos is too expensive. Jeff Smith, a pilot for Delta Airlines was the American tourist and his family that was shot at and robbed in broad daylight. Tourist pour a great amount of money into Honduras and if the country’s crime rate will deter people from vacationing there then that means they will just go to another vacation spot and spend their money. No one wants to go on vacation and constantly look over their shoulder because that beats the purpose of going.
