Summary
A female Canadian tennis player, Eugenie Bouchard, has just
accomplished a significant goal of beating the now former number one Ana Ivanovic
in tennis. This was a great accomplish for her due to the fact that no Canadian
has ever reached the grand slam final. During her celebration of victory the
tennis athlete Eugenie participated in an interview. The interviewer did not
ask questions about her victory or how Eugenie had felt about accomplishing
something so big and making history. Instead she simply asked questions such
as, "Whom would you date?" “Who's the man of your dreams, Eugenie?” “Who
are you crushing on, girl?” The article presented these questions as being a NORM for our society with the idea of “Because,
being a woman, what else could she possibly be interested in?”
Analysis
This article discusses how media sexualizes not just female
athletes but females in general. This Canadian tennis player has just made
history and all one has to ask her is about her interest or preference in men. The
comment “Because, being a woman, what else could she possibly be interested in”
degrades women. It is very shameful that we as Americans can view such comments
and ideas as being a norm and present it to the public using different forms of
media. This broadcasted interview sent out a message to the women race that no
matter how hard you work to accomplish something society views you as being
second to men. The interviewer overlooked her accomplishment and aimed directly
to see who or what kind of man she would be with.
