American Apparel is known for controversial ads. Their latest is controversial in more way than one. First of all, it features a topless woman. Secondly, it says across her chest "Made in Bangladesh. The woman is a merchandiser at American Apparel who was born in Bangladesh. American Apparel is an apparel company that makes their garments in LA factories, paying their employees fair wages with benefits. The ad includes a brief description of the woman and concludes with:
"Maks was photographed in the High Waist Jean, a garment manufactured by 23 skilled American workers in Downtown Los Angeles, all of whom are paid a fair wage and have access to basic benefits such as healthcare.”
This article takes a stab at the recent fires in Bangladeshi sweatshops. These fires have brought working conditions and safety back into the spotlight. American Apparel is a bold company with a large consumer base. I think that someone needs to fight this battle but American Apparel can't do it singlehandedly. Ads like this one get consumers thinking about those fires that occurred a year ago, and discussing them. Consumers have the power to make smarter purchasing decisions. While not all can afford the US made clothing at American Apparel, they can look at the tags in their clothing and make better choices.
