Blog 5: Magnesium and Health in Jamaica

In the Jamaican article, “Magnesium- The Mighty Mineral”, the writer talks about how there are major minerals that everyone always emphasizes you need more of: iron, calcium, potassium and zinc, but they often forget that magnesium is an important mineral for the body. The article states that “it features in more than 300 different biochemical reactions in our bodies and is critical to health and wellness.” The abundance of magnesium in our body, shows that we need a lot of it in order to continue to maintain our health. Magnesium is widely distributed in whole, unprocessed foods like green, leafy vegetables and some fruits. Magnesium has been proven to improve many different health problems such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Magnesium is also known for improving migraines, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and constipation.

It is important to understand the importance of magnesium globally and for the public because it helps prevent many diseases and it is also crucial in survival as it is one of the four most important minerals in the body. Like I said, it helps in prevention of angina, asthma, irregular heartbeat, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, constipation, depression, digestive disorders and irritable bowel syndrome, heart attacks, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insomnia, dizziness, irritability, nervousness, seizures, poor concentration, migraine headaches, muscle cramps, spasms and weakness, kidney stones, premenstrual symptoms, menstrual pain, sugar cravings, and temper tantrums. All of these diseases and symptoms are common among the globe and they each affect people in different ways, so it is important to educate people on the importance of magnesium in order to prevent these diseases from occurring. If people can have a good combination or the four main minerals, they can live a long, healthy life.
