Blog #5 Ukraine, Russia, and a War?

Summary
The situation in Ukraine has escalated. This week Ukraine mobilized troops accusing Russia of declaring war against the country. As leaders around the world push for diplomatic solutions the fear of a conflict rises. Russian troops took to the Crimean peninsula to “intervene”, demanding that Ukraine’s troops hand over their weapons and surrender. By late Sunday Russia had gained control of the peninsula and the Ukraine military bases there. With approximately 6,000 Russian troops on the ground in Crimea, Russia intentions are clear.  The Russian prime mister Dmitry Medvedev wrote in reference to the state of Ukraine  “Such a state of order will be extremely unstable, It will end with the new revolution. With new blood.”  As Ukraine intern prime minister says "This is a red alert. This is not a threat. This is actually a declaration of war to my country," "We are on the brink of the disaster."

Analysis
As the tension between Russia and Ukraine rise so does the chance of war. A world war. What started as a botched trade deal may end in exponential lives lost. This regional conflict is bound to leak out to the surrounding areas and drag in other countries. WWI and WWII began as regional conflicts. The prospect of total war is a great possibility the way the situation is heading.  Ukraine’s army is largely out numbered by Russia’s. Russia would have no problem sizing Ukraine if no one is to intervene between the two. It becomes a moral standpoint. Though we are not directly involved do we, as people, watch one country takes over another and mind are own business, because it is not our problem? Or do we help those in need? Either way it is the governments of Ukraine and Russia that decide what happens next.
