Blog4: Province unveils draft standards of care for Animal Protection Act

Farm animals and factory animals are not the only animals that need protection and have rights. Companion animals hold a special place in most of our hearts. But, at times they are forgotten and are treated badly. Over in Nova Scotia they are now trying to change that and improve the standards of animal protection/rights for companion animals. The new standards of care aim to prevent distress and cruelty and to strengthen the protection of companion animals in Nova Scotia. The new standards for these animals include many regulations. Some of the new regulations for companion animals include outdoor care, shelters, companion animal pens and enclosures, abandonment of companion animals as well as the transportation and sale of these animals. Even though it’s going to take some time to get some of these regulations in place. There are some people who are ready and willing to do as much as they can in order to ensure that the rights of companion animals are protected. An advantage of these changes would allow the SPCA and other enforcement officials, including bylaw officers in municipalities, to issue tickets for certain infractions including tethering a dog for longer than 12 hours a day. During the next month, the department will seek public input into the draft standards of care. This article sparked my interest because here in the United States the animals who are protected the most are companion animals. To hear that there is still a Province that is having to put rules and regulations in place to protect companion animals.
