Blog 8 Philadelphia Brings Us One Step Closer to Equality

Summary: In Philadelphia there has been a recent importance placed on the respect and well-being of the LGBT community. District Attorney Seth Williams has helped to begin the first of many forums to better the relations between the police and the LGBT community. This is not the only gesture, though. The Police Department even established a new policy that focuses on respect for those that are transgendered. This courteous wave does not even stop at the police department. The Philadelphia judges also attended a forum on transgender issues, and the U.S. Department of Justice is implementing transgender training for local law enforcement.

Analysis: This means a lot for not only the community in Philadelphia, but our society as a whole. The fact that our justice system is placing such an importance on the care shown towards citizens is truly comforting. Cooperation and harmony is positive for our society, and I believe these are huge signs of progress as well. There is so much controversy over our system and the friendliness of our police could contribute towards a more positive outlook overall in our society. This could become a "trickle down" process and perhaps make for more motivated hard-working individual as well.
