This article discusses Vietnam being the newest place for garment manufacturing. A number of textile companies are getting trade licenses to open factories in Vietnam. Vietnam is open to new investments as they hope modern factories will boost the economy.

It is interesting to see the shift of textile manufacturing from country to country. Textiles is often the first industry to enter a developing economy as it is low technology and requires relatively unskilled labor. Having studied Global Apparel Studies for a number of years, I have seen garment manufacturing shift from China to Bangladesh and now to Vietnam. China benefitted from the apparel industry, and continues to. As their workforce begins to demand higher wages and better working conditions, China is becoming less appealing to Western apparel companies who want work done for the lowest cost. It will be interesting to see how the garment industry will help develop Vietnam.
