Article Summary

Mauritian capital, Port-Louis

One of the country’s best-prepared countries in the world that is prepared when it comes to natural disasters now faces questions about readiness for coping.  This readiness of coping comes to question because recent heavy rains and flooding. Moreover, ecologist Panray explains due to climate change there will be more flooding to be expected. He goes on explaining, “That the population has yet to understand the effects this will have on the country, and that even the government has not yet begun to prepare for increased rainfall on this Indian Ocean Island.” He is bringing this to attention because there will not be enough time for safety. A s a result of the climate change eleven were killed, a thousand were wounded, and the emergency services were unable to provide effective response to the disaster, and emergency services were overwhelmed. Kauppaymuthoo explains, IPS that people know what to do when a disaster comes because they get warnings. According to the United Nations Development Programme, the island is vulnerable to "considerable economic loss, humanitarian stresses and environmental degradation as a result of climate change impacts. The direct climate change impacts likely to adversely affect Mauritius include an increase in the frequency of intense rainfall episodes, sea level rise of 18 – 59 centimetres by 2100 and an increase in intensity of tropical cyclones." Moreover, other experts such as meteorologist put their input on how the government needs to be prepared for all of the rainfalls that will be coming due to climate change of years of a drought.

Article Critique

Most will agree from a moral, democratic, and societal standpoint that this social issue needs to be dealt with and understood. The article deemphasizes the effect this climate change will have on these families. The article places a lot of emphasis on thousands of dollars being be lost because of damage of buildings, roads, vehicles, shops, and houses. Not only will the government will be having to come up with the budget on how to repair all of the damages caused by the climate change, but also the government will have to come up with a budget to support families. Most will agree that natural disaster is a global issue that affects most families around the world, as families expect the government to help or intervene with a future plan/budget on what will be done to help these families.

Moreover, from a moral standpoint most would agree that this social problem needs to be identified, understood, and dealt with because of the climate change a large number of families were harmed. Also, from a democratic standpoint this social problem needs to be a system of government based on the principle of majority decision making, in order to be committed to bettering the human condition of families that have been affected by this climate change. Most importantly, as these climate changes bring more rain fall this issue needs to be looked at as a societal standpoint because this climate change will affect the continuation of the prepared society as they know it especially for families.
