Enyea Parks : Blog 9

In this article the lack of contraceptives due to poverty is discussed. Birth control is one form of contraception that has been used in the US for 50 years. And in places like the Congo Republic it remains unaffordable for many women. In hospitals and clinics they are refusing birth control admittance if the husband is not present to say he is ok with it.  Huts are spilling over with the amount of kids that each family is producing, and providing their kids with education, food and protection from diseases has been a growing problem. Condoms are easier to obtain, but many don't like using them. In their country, for the father having more kids is something that he is proud of.

Guttmacher Institute, is an institute that studies the reproductive health. During a study done by this institute last year, they came to conclusion that it would cost less than $4 billion to make contraceptives available around the world. So why is no one taking action. You have women in the Congo that are having babies not by choice and losing their lives during this process. Of course you have to take into consideration that condoms are available to some, but for some it may not be that easy. By making contraceptives more available you aren't only helping the mothers out with children and having to provide for them, but also protecting people from contracting AIDS. This would also lower the 150 million deaths due to pregnancy complications yearly. The Obama Administration should make more of an effort to make contraceptive more accessible. Raising a family in today's society is hard enough as it is, however having to raise a family in a poverty-filled country is something totally different. We need to educate these women, and help them in any way possible to save their lives and possibly their children's lives as well.
