Malaz Mohamed Nour UN struggles to stem Haiti Cholera Epidemic

Cholera has swept Haiti in the last few years and the United Nations’ effort to raise money needed is not enough. Clean water supply is short and clinics have run short of oral rehydration salts to treat the diarrhea. When families run out of water purification tablets, they drink from polluted source, most likely streams nearby. For the last three years in a row Haiti has reported the most cases of cholera. The United Nations has a plan to raise 5 million for vaccination purposes and another 2 billion to betterment the water sanitation infrastructure. Over 8000 people had died in Haiti since the 2010 cholera outbreak but new infections have declined. Also the number of cholera treatment center has shrunk from 120 to 40 in the country. This outbreak even spread to neighboring country and cases numbers are expected to reach 40000 as the raining season starts.

This is not a problem of epidemic, but equality and human rights. Although main causes of this cholera breakout is the unsanitary water conditions in Haiti and the weak public health and government attempts  that left the poor with little choice but to drink whatever available ,humans around the world and most specifically developed countries, represented by the United Nations, are responsible for this. The inhumane conditions in Haiti and the facts that the cost to prevent cholera and to prevent it is not costly, proves that what is happening is lack of support and attempts. Experts even say that no one should be dying of cholera. Because less than 2/3 of the population have access to cholera, poor hygienic practices and clinic are very far, number of death are high , the children have very low immunity.

Blog 10: An Easier Way to Delay Cutting the Cord,1:45pm, 04/18/2014, Abdulrahman Alkhaifah

An Easier Way to Delay Cutting the Cord
Summary:
As we all know that in this life we are all come from the same thing that is we grow up in our mom’s abdomen. The delivery is something that is not that easy for the mother and the babies because after keeping the baby for almost nine months that’s take more care until the time come. After the delivery the only thing that connects the mother and the baby is the cord. Which is that’s one of the stuff that doctors around the world discus by cutting the cord immediately or keep in it. Some of the doctors believe that keeping the cord is one way to allow blood to continue flowing from the placenta, improving iron stores in the baby.  However, according to the article “An Easier Way to Delay Cutting the Cord” by Catherine Saint Louis says that new study has found that it is probably unnecessary that babies who were placed on their mothers’ stomachs before clamping fared just as well as those who were held lower, the researchers found. The study made up for 194 babies that been pleased on their mother’s abdomen for a few minutes and another 194 babies that been pleased in the low level of their mother’s vagina for also a few minutes. Which all of these newborn babies still attached to with their mothers through the cord. The result shows that the babies in the first group whom are pleased in their mother’s abdomen gained 53 grams of blood and the other group had gained 56 grams.  Finally, one of the reasons the practice hasn’t been more widely adopted could be simply that holding a bloody, squirming newborn is cumbersome, said Dr. Raju.

Analyze:
I think that the case of baby delivery is one of the hardest feeling that the mother’s face during this situation. What they said of keeping the cord for few minutes that may really help both the mother and the baby in healthy way. I agree that if they keep the cord between the baby and the mother it may help them to feel healthier by moving the blood between the mother and the baby. On other said, I believe that all the people must cleansing the umbilical cord after a while because keep in it that will may cause to some other disease in this area of the body. In the end, what dr. Raju said is truth because they will think this well negative effects the baby and the mother which make this idea did not run widely.

White House Expert: Global Health is National Security Issue

Elizabeth Cameron, director for countering biological threats with the national security council, talks about how we face global challenges to fund the needed leverage of recourses to help better detect and respond to disease threats. The challenge is finding the funds to help this research and detection is at its highest and most effective potential as possible. Over the past decade, public health threats such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, and certain flu strains, including H5N1 and H1N1, have set local, regional and national governments in a hurry to coordinate a response. This article talked about the need to get past more than just Emergency preparedness. We have to get beyond asking how quickly cases were detected or how many vaccines were delivered and must get to a deeper understanding of the root causes, how and why this public health emergency occurred and why the system preformed as it did.

Understanding why and how a certain disease arose is important to making sure a global health crisis doesn’t occur, however it is also important come up with ways to solve future problems that haven’t occurred. Preparedness is crucial when it comes to preventing disease on a global level. Infections life threatening and contagious disease spread is so easily spread if we do not find ways to prevent the problem before it becomes a problem. For example, when we figured out that simply washing our hands after using the bathroom or before eating, we created a way to help minimize the chance of disease spread. Things as simple as this can help us prevent outbreaks that could become a global health problem. As technology advances we should make sure that we not only advance with that technology but we educate others that are less privileged and don’t have the recourses to become aware of this knowledge, become aware.

Neurostimulation

Neurostimulation is catching the worlds attention and in particular the medical advancement and scientific industries. Neurostimulation devices are increasingly being used to help with pain management. Each year an estimated 100 million people worldwide suffer from chronic pain. The current solution to treat chronic pain is mostly drugs. In the long run drugs are increasingly proven to not help consistently. Currently, neurostimulation devices have begun test trials to treat chronic pain. These trials are undergoing for disorders such as epilepsy, obesity, Parkinson's disease, depression, sexual dysfunction, cardiovascular disorders, movement disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, urinary tract disorders, sensory disorders and drug addiction. People are still hesitant to have a device inserted into their bodies but the test and trials that they are undergoing, seem to be promising.

This idea of having an electronic device placed into our bodies does seem a bit scary, however we are practically doing the same thing when we consume a pill. Drugs are often abused and addictive when treating chronic diseases and disorders. I think that electronic devices will become less scary as technology advances and a few brave individuals begin to show positive side effects to this neurostimulation devices. As our society advances and technology slowly and steadily increases, so will peoples perceptions of these devices.

Blog #9: Guatemala Ends River Blindness

Summary: "Onchocera vulvulus", or river blindness is a disease that stems from a worm, which infected the Heuhuetango Department of Guatemala. This disease is not fatal but it handicaps your eyesight for the rest of your life. For several years this worm has been a part of a study done by the Journal of Parasitology Research. In order to eradicate such a parasite the Guatemalan Ministry of Health had to reach out to it's international partners for help. Organizations like the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization helped in Guatemala's time of need. The WHO help deliver over 22 rounds of mass treatment, which affected 85% of their target population. Huehuetango is not the only endemic location making progress. In 2011, Colombia eliminated river blindness throughout the entire country. This gives a positive hope for the people of Guatemala and for future countries if they should come in contact with the parasite.

Analysis: The parasite is transmitted to humans by a black fly bite and once inside your body the worms will mate and produce thousands of offspring. These offspring can go all throughout the body but can also end up in the tissues of the eye, which causes blindness. It isn't a fatal disease but one that can affect a family in major ways. Children could be left to work and provide for the family, Adults would have a hard time doing things they used to, and would be very challenging to find any sort of job. So this is important for the well-being of the Guatemalan people that we eliminate this disease once and for all. I think that if we support the organizations and give a little money we could see really change. The outcome of eliminating this disease in Guatemala is showing to be a positive situation, and that has to make the people there feel much more safe. Plus, water without parasites will be a great thing! You don't have to wonder if you will go blind the next time you jump in a river or stop by a stream. This is the peace of mind Huehuetango can't wait to have and I'm positive that this will be eliminated !

Drinking Milk Linked to Arthritis Relief
Summary:
All around the world there are some kinds of disease that are common between a lots of people. Some of these diseases are hereditary in some families around the whole world. Thus, the humans are always looking for some of ways to relief or fight these diseases. One of these diseases that are very common between people in the world is the osteoarthritis.  According to the article “Drinking Milk Linked to Arthritis Relief” by Nicholas Bakalar says that the centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the osteoarthritis affects 14% of the people that they are over 25 and also affects 34% of the people of age 65 and over.  Some of theses causes of the osteoarthritis are smoking, weight and alcohol consumption. Thus, that is made some researcher to make some study for different people man and women. After a few years they find out that they people who drink milk that they are healthier and assessed from osteoarthritis.  Which means that the people who drink milk are more likely to be away from this disease. That because the milk has some of the important ingredients helps bones to be healthy and strong.  Finally, the lead author, Dr. Bing Lu, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard, had a simple said that the people with osteoarthritis should increase of drinking milk even low fat or free fat milk.
Analyze:

After reading this article, its makes me be more care about my health and try to stay healthy to avoid the diseases. The osteoarthritis is one of the dangers diseases that people around me face. The milk is one of the important drink in my life almost everyday I drink more then one cup of milk because I know that milk is more healthy and has a lots of elements that help me to get a good health and kind of protecting me from the osteoarthritis. Thus, I believe that what said in they article about milk and how it connected to arthritis relief. So, I think that the people must drink milk daily to avoid this disease and stay healthy. Also, there are many benefits of drinking milk such as strong bones, protein and many other benefits of milk.

After Measles Success, Rwanda to get Rubella Vaccination, Malaz Mohamed nour

Rwanda held a campaign on March 11 of a measles-rubella vaccination. It is the first country to get to get donor support to do so. The campaign extended for three days and millions of children up to age 14 and to integrate this to cover vaccination by its national health service. Rubella, very similar to measles, is mild in children but can cause serve damages to pregnant women and permanent damages to the baby. The move was to make identify rubella, since it is similar to other rashes, and provide a more expensive vaccination. A number of mothers, mostly in Africa, South Asia and the pacific island give birth to handicap due to rubella infection. The tiny country has taking initiative and since 2007, there are zero number of cases of measles and about 90 percent of Rwanda children have been vaccinated. While in wealthy countries measles kills small number of children whose mother miss their vaccination, in poor countries measles kills many although can be contaminated by vaccination easily.

This article is like many and the problem of lack of vaccination is all over poor countries, especially those in Africa but the numbers here are better. To have 0 cases of an infection that once killed many infants for couple of years show that the fight against it is strong and continuous. We also see that not only is funding but awareness of the important of vaccination and mother cooperation is crucial in fighting such disease. Another obstacle usually faced is being aware of symptoms and in this case, mismatching rubella or measles with regular rashes. We hope to see such moves worldwide and the facts that such a country as Rwanda was able to reach such success proves that it is possible for other countries and other disease by intense, continuous work.

Even Small Bug Bites Can Be Deadly, WHO Warns.

Even Small Bug Bites Can Be Deadly, WHO Warns

The World Health Organization reported that disease-causing organisms, like mosquitoes, mites, ticks, fleas and sand flies, cause up to one million deaths globally each year. Even just a small bight from these bugs can cause horrible infectious disease. A large number of these diseases are directly linked to larger trends like urbanization, globalization and environmental change. The WHO has created a campaign called “small Bite, Big Threat” which creates awareness about the harmful dangers caused by mosquitoes and other small bug bites that can become deadly and how people can protect them from getting these bites.

They suggest using insect repellent or bed nets treated with insecticide. They also highly encourage vaccination, installing window screens and wearing light colored long sleeved shirts. These vector borne diseases have the most adverse effects on the poorest people in Asia pacific regions. Some of the most dangerous bites can occur during the day when we are out and about. According to the WHO, vector borne diseases account for more than 17 % of all infectious diseases across the globe. More than 2.5 billion people in over 100 countries are at risk of contracting dengue alone, with roughly 75% of those cases recorded in the Asia pacific region.

Many areas in the world often overlook vector borne disease. The WHO is an organization that is attempting to create awareness in countries that are most at risk for detecting these disease but they are also creating awareness to others around the world. Globalization and environmental changes are key factors in understanding and creating awareness to others about preventing the spread and detection of this vector borne disease spread.

Blog #8: Demetia Rises in the UK

Summary: A total of 2/3 of the women in the UK have been diagnosed with dementia. This is a steadily growing diagnosis, with fewer than 670,000 men and women being formally diagnosed. This is a problem because more and more women are unable to work or do things for themselves anymore. There is no treatment for this disease, but there are medications, memory clinics, and activities such as singing and excerising can help people remain independant longer. There are also those who have been wrongully diagnosed, which can throw off the rate of diagnosis. They count the rate of diagnosis by the amount of formal diagnosis. When people are wrongly dianosed it causes a change in attitude and the way people live their lives.

Analysis: This disease encompasses the mind and effects not only the memory but also the daily activities. What people are used to doing then gets forgotten and at times it can be scary. So anything that can be done to keep the independence, memory, and overall attittude of the person needs to be done. It does not have a cure and can be very scary for the surrounding family to see a loved one go through this. The increase mas mainly been in women and that is surreal for the children and spouses of these women. It is a chronic disease that eases it's way into it's human host. The slow onset can goive the person affected time to deal with what will happen to them. The funding for research of this disease is underfunded and needs to be given the chance for proper research. The effect of the lack of research will be in the lives of those with dementia. For some the disease is fairly mild and don't necessarily undergo major changes but for others it is life changing. I sincerely hope that there is more money put towards the research of this disease in the future.

World Health Day 2014.

World Health Day 2014: Preventing Vector-borne diseases – ‘Small bite, big threat’
The World Health Organization highlighted a particular risk of disease for April 7th, which is world health day. Vector-borne diseases strike more than one billion people every year and more than one million die from those diseases. The WHO emphasized that these diseases are entirely preventable. By making a health agenda that gives a higher priority to vector control, we could save lives. Vector-borne diseases mostly effect poor population due to the large amount of poor housing conditions and un safe drinking water. By making things available such as more bug nets that are distributed to more people who might not have access to travel to a lace to get one and by providing these places with safer drinking water, we could help prevent more deaths do to these type of vector-borne diseases. Mosquito-borne dengue, for example, is now found in 100 countries, putting more than 2.5 billion people – over 40% of the world’s population at risk.

This last statistic is a key-shocking factor in creating awareness of possible disease risks that can drastically impact our world’s population and deaths. The WHO is a create organization that seems to be great at spreading awareness about disease and health issues such as this however it would be even more helpful if each state found some way to create awareness of different types of disease and possible outbreaks worldwide. The awareness of people in the US is a good thing however it is more important to create the awareness and the proper preventative equipment to those that are in poorer regions of the world were awareness and actually help can actually save a life or even a whole communities life.

Pollution is the world’s biggest killer: Dirty air has overtaken heart disease, diet and even smoking-related deaths as the biggest preventable killer:

In 2012 one in eight deaths worldwide were linked to pollution. The main causes of death linked to this pollution are heart disease, strokes and lung disease. The World Health Organization reported that in 2012 pollution was the world’s single biggest environmental health risk. It was the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. The risks and evidence is more prevalent than ever before that air pollution is a huge risk factor that must be corrected if we hope to have a future on this earth. Indoor pollution is a large cause of cooking over coal, wood and biomass stoves. The World Health Organization confirmed that 2.9 billion people worldwide live in home that uses this thing as their main cooking fuel. Poorer countries obviously have a higher risk of indoor pollution because many of them don’t have any other cooking options. Outdoor pollution is mainly transported by power generation, industrial and agricultural emissions and residential heating and cooking. Although alternate environmental friendly products are more expensive to produce, they could in return save our environment and billions of lives. Money is obviously always going to be a factor when it comes to technology. It is the sad but true side of how far the industrial revolution and modern technology has taken us, which has left us still polluting the air that we breathe. The solution to this problem has been discovered. Technological adamants have given us environmentally friendly ways to stop this pollution and save more lives, however the world is run by people in power and people in power usually don’t give away expensive things to people that can afford them.

Iraq Enviromental Poisoning, Malaz Mohamed

The group Right to Heal came to the US government concerning the environmental poisoning of Iraq during the war. This group that is concerned about the after war effects on veterans and civilian claimed that the burn pits used by the US to dispose military waste and that was banned by congress 4 years before, continued to cause  health problems in Iraq. The group held a Quaker meeting house in Washington where witness talked about personal experience faced in Iraq as result of the dangerous burn pit and others (scientist) blamed the US for downplaying the health effects. One of the group demands is large-scale clean in Iraq and tracking of the health of the civilian who suffered the smoked of the burned plastic, metal cans, rubber and other materials. On the other side, reports from the Institution of Medicine show that not enough data exist to conclude that pollution that will cause long-term health exist. There are other studies and data collected that show higher rate of birth defects, cancers and other abnormalities are found in areas such as Fallujah, near Bagdad.

This problem of toxics and poisonous gases is very expected as remains of war. The problem becomes more alarming to know that those involved are in larger numbers than usual. Although the Iraq veterans and the civilians are the main victim, US soldiers are another party in this situation. This problem will worsen with Iraq’s dust storm and the toxic substance can spread to areas with less direct effect. In addition the poverty in many areas of Iraq, the street children, unsupported large families, and other condition resulting from soci-economic factors and the war can make things worse. Living in such condition with chaotic war condition and unsettle condition just lead the families to stay where they are regardless of the condition surrounding them.

Blog #7: Guinea Ebola Outbreak: Bat Eating Banned to Curb Virus

Summary: The Ebola virus has reared it's ugly head in Guinea and has taken the lives of 62 of the country's people. It spreads by close contact with those infected with the disease, and there is no known vaccine or cure. The symptoms include internal and external bleeding, vomiting, and diarrhea. Numerous cases, in Guinea, have shown that the Ebola virus has been found in one of the country's local delicacy, bats. The bats are the natural reservoirs and pose a threat to all who come in contact with them. Guinea has stopped all sale and consumption of bats to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. The World Health Organization has helped Guinea by offering much needed supplies and helped set up quarantine places in the country. These things will hopefully contain the virus and help prevent further spread of the virus to other countries. The health ministry in Guinea assures it's people that they are doing everything possible to keep the virus under control and will continue the efforts. Now sources are saying that recent cases of Ebola were not proved to have the virus. The virus usually appears in remote villages and places where the climate is warm, moist, and have bats.

Analysis: This is the first significant outbreak of the Ebola virus to date in Guinea! The Ebola virus or according to WHO, "Viral Hemorrhagic Fever" is a very severe and fatal illness (fatality rate is 90% in humans). In order for the disease to complete transmission into a human, the human must come in contact with bodily fluids of an animal that contains Ebola. In Guinea's case it was the fruit bat that was a delicacy to the people. This fluid from the animal gets into the bloodstream of the human and spreads. This causes bleeding internally and externally, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. These symptoms gradually get worse, and according to WHO the infected human usually dies from a low blood pressure. No cure to this acute illness has been found yet, which makes this disease a big threat to not only the remote villages but everyone in contact with those who have the disease. The biggest threat in Guinea, which are the bats, are no longer a part of the consumer sale or consumption by any Guinea citizen. This is because of bats being a natural reservoir of this virus, and due to that fact it threatens the lives of anyone who eats or comes in contact with the bodily fluids of the bats. This is one step in a long process to eliminate the disease entirely. There are several quarantine places that people even suspected of the disease can go to so that they can prevent the spread. Again just another precautionary action to prevent others from dying by such an awful illness.

Blog #6, Malaz Mohamed Nour, Health and Disease, India and Polio

Although India records of immunization measles, rubella hepatitis B, TB and others similar were low in comparisons to the national rates; its polio rates are much assuring. India has achieved a 95 percent coverage, which became a model of its other effort of vaccination. Similar polio campaign efforts are being applied for other routine vaccination. Many organizations, including Unief that tries to communicate polio to the world, have efforts since 1988. Another is the World Health Organization that does a lot of data regarding collection, tracking and studying of samples. Secrets of the polio campaign success in India is in the efforts of raising awareness, large spending and detailed data that lead to results that are accounted nationally.  Another is the number of case workers in India who helped in informing the families and getting to various areas.

Polio is a problem that, although is decreasing in rate around the world, is scary were found. Places like India, Afghanistan and Pakistan account for the largest polio numbers in the world. Poverty, lack of awareness and sometimes being in that part of the world, make you at a much higher risk than others. Such campaign is something that set models for other countries and regions in the world having the same problem. Although organizations exist all over, little are actually able to reach far enough. Most of the time the problem is not where the problem is found but how to reach it where it is found, rural areas is often hard to reach which makes communication with its people impossible. Sometimes cultural differences and religious believe create boundaries and slow the message. In addition, sometimes places just don’t have money, and India’s ability to make such spending was important. Another critical point is awareness. The social workers who moved from door to door talking to mothers and giving their message of what to do now and later, even before vaccination, were very effective. Changing the mentality of how the people view such an alarming health issue in this campaign played a big role in controlling the problem itself.

Blog 6: Lung Cancer in UK Women Rises by 73%

Summary:
Since the 1960's the number of men who smoke has been on a steady decrease, but the number of women didn't really decrease until the 1970s. Since about 1975, the rates of lung cancer have decreased a significant 20% in the UK. In 2011, the number of lung cancer cases was 43,500. It was the men of the UK that comprised 23,800 cases women 19,500 cases. The number of deaths from this cancer in the UK was 35,200. A disease that greatly affected men, is now impacting and taking the lives of more women than ever before. In the last 40 years lung cancer in women has almost doubled and the UK has the highest rates in all the world. In 87% of these cases smoking is the causing factor, and this is an avoidable and treatable issue. Sara Hiom is the director of early diagnosis of cancer research. She believes that if people were to visit the Dr. as soon as they felt the onset of symptoms physicians can better treat the cancer.

Analysis:
It is important to recognize the severity of this issue. Smoking has been causing issues for years and it is beginning to effect the lives of many across the UK. Lung cancer is a painful disease that targets the fragile lung tissue. It will deteriorate and make it hard to eat, swallow, or even make it hard to simply breathe. In the UK, it's the men that have led with the most cases of this disease but in the last 40 years the number of women with lung cancer has almost doubled. This is astounding and scary, however the majority of them is again due to smoking. This disease is treatable and as experts say, "the attitudes that lung cancer is a death sentence must change." At the moment this attitude is hard to find, because less than 10% of people who have lung cancer cannot survive up to 5 years after diagnosis. It is our job to protect our bodies from danger and next time we think about lighting up a cigarette we should think about these astounding numbers in the UK. These numbers aren't far from our numbers in the United States and we should be aware of what we put into our bodies. It is also important to go to the doctor as soon as you feel the onset of lung cancer symptoms. That way the treatment can start sooner and the chance of remission can increase. Awareness of this disease is important and everyone should know the eminent threat this poses to men and women who smoke, and those who work in places conducive to this disease.

How a Warm-up Routine Can Save Your Knees

Summary:

In these days, there are many injuries that cause some damage to our bodies. That is because of some bad moves that we make whole we are doing different kind of sports, like soccer, basketball and other sports. One of the famous injuries that happened for the players in the knees and that because of some reasons like bad moves or that player did not warm up very well. According to the article “How a Warm-Up Routine Can Save Your Knees” by Gretcen Reynolds, says that almost 150,000 cases a year that happened to some of the players by some damage in their knees. So, that damage to our knees may cause chronic damage, which make the level of the sport we do go down. In the past few years, there are some researchers make or developed some program training that help to reduce the number by 50% of this injury to the players. Thus, this program help the trainers to train the players some warm up exercises to help the player to avid this kind of injury. Also, this program is become as physiotherapy to the player who have this injury and that help him/her to come back after this damage. According to the researchers say that the cost of this program $1.25 per one player, which is cheaper then the surgery that cost thousand of dollars.  Finally, this program not only warm up the body but also help us to wake up the brain and nervous system.

 Analyze:

I believe that in these days we see a lot of injuries to players around the world that cause some negative damage to them. For me, I’m big fan of soccer and I watch and play a lot of soccer with friends and I can tell that some time we see this kind of injury in the knees. So, I think this kind of program that we need to learn more about and do it before we play some kind of sports. And that is because we must warm up the muscles in our bodies before we play so that help us to avid this damage. I always try to warm up about 10-15 mins before I play soccer so that help me to give some advantage and also keep away from this injuries.
